The warp drive: hyper-fast travel within general relativity
The paper that started it all. A spacetime geometry that carries a flat bubble at any speed, at the price of negative energy.
Class. Quantum Grav. 11, L73 ↗Warp Dynamics builds drives that contract spacetime ahead of a vessel and expand it behind. No propellant to burn. No speed that outruns light. Just geometry.
Nothing may move faster than light locally. But spacetime itself can bend however it likes. The expansion of the universe already proves it.
Our thesis: If you can shape the metric, you no longer need a rocket. The ship rests in a flat bubble, and the bubble glides.
The function f(r) is one inside and zero outside, with a thin wall in between. Space shrinks ahead of the ship and grows behind it. The plot shows the expansion rate θ of spacetime around a bubble gliding to the right.
Nanoscale Casimir cavities produce negative energy density. We stack them into coherent arrays, one layer at a time.
Topology solvers push a bubble's energy budget down from the mass of Jupiter to that of one tonne. Still exotic, but on an engineer's scale.
A bubble is unstable. Our control core reads the field a trillion times per second and keeps the wall smooth before Hawking radiation tears it apart.
Interferometric detection of spacetime distortion in the lab. Target: a measurable deviation of 10⁻²¹ inside a Casimir cavity.
A stable bubble one millimetre across, held for over a microsecond. A photon inside travels faster than its neighbour.
The satellite Kestrel-1 shifts one metre without reaction mass. The first displacement ever achieved by metric drive.
An uncrewed probe to Proxima Centauri b at warp 4. It arrives within a human lifetime, including those of the engineers who built it.
Speed alone isn't the point. A light sail is fast but carries one gram. A pulse ship is slower but carries a small town. Each drive opens a new mix of speed and payload, flies in its own right, and funds the next.
Electric fields fling xenon ions out at 50 km/s. The thrust is weak, but it never stops. It is a work in progress and will pay for our labs.
Work in progressSmall nuclear charges detonate behind a massive pusher plate. Slower than a sail, but it moves a thousand tonnes. It is the first drive that can carry people and cargo to the stars.
Design studyA one-gram chip on a sail thinner than a soap bubble, pushed by a laser array on Earth. Very fast, but it carries only sensors. It is our scout to Proxima.
PrototypeLasers ignite 250 deuterium–helium-3 pellets per second inside a magnetic nozzle. It is the first drive that is both fast and heavy.
Lab researchMicrograms of antiprotons trigger fusion in compressed fuel. It has the highest energy density there is, stored in traps colder than space.
TheoryNo exhaust and no speed limit inside the bubble. Space contracts ahead and expands behind. Every drive above is a step toward this one.
The goalWarp drives are not science fiction. They are an open question in general relativity. This library collects the work we build on, including the papers that say it can't be done.

Class. Quantum Grav. 11, L73 ↗Analyses a permanent faster-than-light corridor as an alternative to a moving bubble, along with its energy and causality problems.
Phys. Rev. D 56, 2100 ↗Quantum inequalities force the bubble wall to be extremely thin and the required negative energy enormous. This is the classic objection.
Class. Quantum Grav. 14, 1743 ↗Keeps a large interior behind a microscopic outer surface and cuts the energy budget by many orders of magnitude.
Class. Quantum Grav. 16, 3973 ↗Shows that contracting and expanding space is not essential. A warp bubble can slide through space without changing volume.

JBIS 69, 40 ↗Proposes faster-than-light soliton solutions sourced by ordinary positive energy in plasma. Provocative and debated.
arXiv 2006.07125 ↗A general proof that warp drives need exotic matter somewhere. Any positive-energy claim has to answer this paper.
arXiv 2105.03079 ↗Treats every warp drive as a shell of matter and outlines slower-than-light warp drives built from positive energy.
arXiv 2102.06824 ↗Constructs warp geometries with purely positive energy density and greatly reduced energy requirements.
arXiv 2104.06488 ↗A slower-than-light warp drive that satisfies the energy conditions. It is the first solution of this kind and the closest thing to an engineering target.
Class. Quantum Grav. 41, 095013 ↗Short, sourced answers to the questions people ask most, with the research kept apart from our plans.
We're looking for theoretical physicists, nanofabrication engineers, control engineers, and people who think all of this is impossible and want to try anyway.
